What current products can monitor
Direct manufacturer materials show several different designs. Zurn’s SmartPro product family uses ultrasonic monitoring and offers models that monitor grease or oil level, sediment, combined pollutants, temperature, or total liquid. KESSEL describes SonicControl as an ultrasonic device that measures grease-layer thickness and provides alarms and an electronic logbook. Other products may have different probes, alarms, communications, and compatible equipment.
That evidence supports the existence of monitoring and alarm functions for named products. It does not support a universal accuracy percentage, battery life, installation time, savings rate, price, return on investment, or adoption forecast for the entire category.
Start with the problem you need to solve
Define the decision the system should support. Examples include alerting staff to a high liquid condition, showing a change in FOG or solids level, providing a local display, or sending information to a building-management platform. Then ask the vendor to identify the exact model, measured values, alarm logic, limitations, and evidence for each promised feature.
Do not assume that every system continuously measures flow, pH, grease composition, or equipment health. Confirm each function in the current specification and installation manual.
Check compatibility and maintenance
- interceptor manufacturer, model, dimensions, chambers, materials, and access;
- approved mounting location and whether the installation affects a listing or warranty;
- power, battery, radio, cellular, gateway, or wired connection requirements;
- probe cleaning, inspection, calibration, testing, and replacement instructions;
- temperature, chemical, moisture, and enclosure limits;
- how an alarm is confirmed and who responds; and
- what happens during power, battery, gateway, or network failure.
Manufacturer instructions can contain important maintenance limits. For example, Zurn’s Z1194 page says the interceptor must be cleaned of solids and debris and its sensors wiped regularly for proper operation. Requirements for another product may differ.
Keep compliance separate from the dashboard
A monitoring record may help with operations, but it does not replace a locally required inspection, service interval, manifest, maintenance record, or approved method. Ask the wastewater or pretreatment authority whether sensor information is accepted and whether any fixed service or reporting rule still applies.
Do not let a vendor or hauler change a required schedule solely from sensor readings unless the controlling authority permits that approach. Keep manual checks and professional service in the plan when required by the authority, manufacturer, or site conditions.
Run a measured pilot before scaling
For a multi-site operation, test the exact product at a small number of representative locations. Record installation issues, missed or nuisance alarms, manual comparison results, maintenance time, connection outages, staff response, and any change in service decisions. A useful pilot measures site results rather than relying on a market-wide savings claim.
Review data ownership, retention, export, user access, security updates, subscription terms, product support, and what happens to historical records when service ends. Put performance promises and responsibilities in writing.

Do grease trap sensors work with every interceptor?
No universal compatibility claim is justified. Match the exact sensor model to the interceptor, access, environment, installation instructions, and any required approval.
Can a sensor replace scheduled pumping?
Only the controlling local program can determine whether condition-based scheduling is allowed. Manufacturer instructions and actual site conditions also remain relevant.
How accurate is a FOG sensor?
Accuracy, resolution, and limitations are product-specific. Request the current technical documentation and compare readings with the accepted manual or service method during a pilot.
Will a sensor prevent every overflow?
No. A sensor, alarm, connection, power source, or response process can fail, and other plumbing problems can cause a backup. Monitoring should sit inside a broader maintenance and response plan.
